Trans Day of Remembrance 2024
We recently gathered to recognize Trans Day of Remembrance and heard from some of our trans siblings about what this day means to them. You can watch on our YouTube channel.
If you’re needing support, you can find available resources on the Find Support page of our website.
Trans Day of Remembrance was first observed in 1999 to memorialize the murders of two trans women, Rita Hester and Chanelle Pickett. After speaking with other trans folks about the murders, Gwendolyn Ann Smith organized a vigil in San Francisco’s Castro neighborhood to honour them. Trans Day of Remembrance is now observed around the world.
We know that this day often brings up difficult conversations but they are so important to have. Remember, trans and gender-diverse people are not at higher risk for things like depression and anxiety simply because they are trans; they are at higher risk because of the hate and discrimination from the people around them.
As an organization, we reaffirm our commitment to the advocacy and education needed to disrupt the rampant misinformation around the trans community. We encourage everyone to commit to being an active ally and calling out transphobia wherever they may encounter it. Together, we can create a safer world for all trans and gender-diverse people.
