Pride 2024 Speeches

Info

Pembina Valley Pride will be holding our annual Pride March and Rally in Altona’s Centennial Park (227 10th Ave NW) on Saturday, June 8th, 2024.

All 2SLGBTQIA+ people and our allies are welcome to participate in the march and join the rally. This is a participatory march rather than a spectator event.

For more Pride Month events in the Pembina Valley, visit our calendar!

  • Altona United Church (45 3rd Ave SE) will be hosting an affirming church service at 10:30am.

Rainbow Makers Market opens at 12PM and the event will begin at 1PM. We will begin with the speeches this year, followed by the march and a drag show.

  • Participants are asked to be respectful neighbours by parking at the Park, the Millenium Exhibition Centre, street parking and designated areas rather than blocking local business parking.

  • Visit our event map on Google Maps for this year’s march route. We will be starting and ending in Altona’s Centennial Park at 227 10th Ave NW.

  • At Pembina Valley Pride, we strive to be as accessible as possible. Here are some things we have in place to live into that vision:

ASL Interpreter – we will have an ASL interpreter there for the opening remarks and for the duration of the speeches.

Sensory friendly zone – we will have a sensory friendly zone designated at the front of the march. This will be a quieter space, and will set the pace of the march so nobody gets left behind.

There will also be a quiet area at the park available for anyone who needs it.

Online options – For those who are unable to attend our event in-person, we will be streaming highlights throughout the afternoon and will post the full video after the event.

Mobility issues – For those who anticipate mobility issues, we will be marching in a loop this year. Some board members will be staying at the park and you’re welcome to hang out and welcome the parade back!

Accessible washrooms and an accessible play area are available at the park.

  • Safety of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community (and our allies) is a top priority of Pembina Valley Pride.

Please note that, while we would love for everybody to be safe to live authentically, we recognize that this is sometimes not the case. We aren’t able to guarantee that photos taken in public places will not be published online or in publications, and we ask that you keep this in mind if your personal safety and security is a potential concern.

We have first aid provided by the Altona Fire Department, and Southern Health knows we’re going to be in the area.

Water bottles will be available at the park, free of charge.

We will have portable washrooms on site with handwashing stations. Hand sanitizer will be readily available and we encourage you to practice good hand hygiene. There is also an accessible washroom available at the park.

We encourage the use of masks, especially if you are in close proximity to others or indoors.

  • Leaving the town cleaner than we found it will demonstrate the character of our community. Please ensure you are leaving nothing behind.

While protesters may be present, participants are asked not to engage with them, as this day is about our community. If you feel your safety is at risk, find a volunteer and let them know.

We encourage you to wear a mask, and ask that you stay home if you aren’t feeling well or have tested positive for COVID.

  • Pembina Valley Pride Parade is a family friendly event. We will have face painting and a family activity area. There is also an accessible play structure at the park for kids to play on.
